Awakening the Life-Force Within Us
By Dr. Joan Norton
“Our brains are star-gates, our bodies celled of
mysteries, which when unraveled, give us citizenship in a universe
richer than our aspirations and more intriguing than all our dreams. Our
minds and bodies have dimensions as large as these and are able to
sustain a flowering of life and consciousness far greater than any we
presently know.”
- Jean Houston, Life Force –
Perhaps one of the truly great boons of the age of information is the
knowledge we are now beginning to gain concerning the powers and
capabilities resident within our own bodies. Scientific research now
confirms what ancient healing traditions have taught for centuries, that
the body’s innate intelligence has amazing even miraculous self-renewing
capacities.
Many of us are probably now familiar with the significant number of case
histories documenting spontaneous healings of severe or even
life-threatening diseases. Perhaps we have read books or articles or
seen documentaries on television, which detail some of the body’s
remarkable capacities for self-renewal, self-healing and deep emotional
and physical transformation. If these cases of spontaneous remissions of
disease, self-healing and personal transformation were to occur in even
one person the implication would be that they are powers latent in every
individual. The large number of such cases simply confirms that fact
that these powerful self-renewing capacities reside within each of us.
Why then does this power seem to manifest seemingly sporadically? Why
are these amazing powers of our mind and body not available to us fully
and consistently? Through information gathered from a variety of
disciplines and areas of research we are now discovering that it is the
nervous system and spine that may hold the secrets to unlocking this
Life-Force within us.
As it pertains to our own body-mind, we may think of this Life-Force
within us as our Innate Intelligence – the individualized human
expression of the same, flawless intelligence which creates, coordinates
and regulates every living form in the physical universe. This marvelous
Life-Force which is capable of creating the delicate beauty of a rose or
the towering majesty of a redwood is expressed in the human body as the
deep organizing intelligence which heals a cut, beats the heart,
rebuilds our bones, inspires our creativity, generates our insights and
directs us toward wise and healthy choices. Indeed, every person
contains within them, from their breath to their DNA, the infinite
organizing intelligence of the universe.
The primary storehouse and essential conduit for this Life-Force within
the body is our nervous system, which includes the brain, spinal cord
and spinal nerves. Studies regarding the spine and the brain continue to
reveal just how essential a well-functioning spine and nervous system
are to both our physical and emotional well-being. Since it is the
nervous system which controls and coordinates every regulatory system in
our body - including the reproductive, digestive, glandular,
circulatory, and immune systems, any obstruction or diminishment in the
nervous system’s capacity to exchange energy and information can pose a
serious threat to our body’s ability to respond to and recover from
stresses placed upon it. In other words, when our internal communication
system is impaired the free-flow of Life-force throughout the body is
also hampered; our body and mind are thus put at risk and our ability to
live at our full potential likewise diminished.
Given this information, we can now understand why the world’s ancient
healing systems have so often held the spine and nervous system with
such high reverence and respect and consider the spine as the primary
storehouse of the Life-Force within the human body.
Almost all religious, spiritual and healing traditions speak of this
power, or Life-Force, resident in our bodies. In the yogic and Hindu
traditions they speak of the Life-Force as the kundalini or serpent
power which rises from the sacrum along the spine correcting and opening
the various chakras or energy centers of the body. The Japanese call the
Life-Force, ki, and the Chinese chi. It is taught in these traditions
that when the spine is cleared of its inhibiting patterns profound
regenerative and healing capacities are awakened which facilitate every
area of human growth and evolution.
In Mexico, this spinal energy/Life-Force was represented as the
serpent-god Quetzalcoatl; the Kung people of the Kalahari Desert call
this same power n/um. The Hopi Indians of North America teach that along
the spinal column of man runs an axis containing a number of vibratory
centers starting at the top of the head and flowing to the base of the
spine. The healers of the Hopi tradition teach that when this power is
accessed and allowed to flow an individual returns to his original
wholeness.
Although the names used to describe this resident power and the means by
which this power is evoked vary from culture to culture, it is clearly a
universal phenomenon. If you and I are to access this innate and
most-powerful intelligence within us, it is obvious that the channels by
which this intelligence flows must be clear of its obstructions. In
other words, both the obvious and hidden interference patterns must be
released from the spine and nervous system so that the free-flow of
life-force can take place and the full healing process begin.
If each of us is to realize our true life potential, we must begin to
recognize and access our body’s’ profound capacities for self-renewal,
self-healing and transformation. By giving more attention to the health
and well-functioning of our spine and nervous system, we can begin to
access this abundant flow of Life-Force within us, and so awaken our
innate intelligence and its seemingly miraculous powers.
