This is an
intelligent universe and we are conscious beings in a conscious
universe. The nervous system is the privileged organ of nature through
which the universe itself is becoming conscious of itself. The universe
is becoming conscious through you and me and that is the privilege that
we have.

How the Body
Communicates with Itself

An amazing
self-correcting and self-healing capacity exists within every human
body. As science continues to gather evidence concerning these
unique and powerful capacities of the body-mind, a great deal of
scientific study has been directed at discovering exactly how these
innate healing mechanisms work and how they can be accessed and
activated. Research gathered from a variety of disciplines, holistic
medical approaches as well as ancient healing traditions reveals
that the single most important factor in unlocking our body's innate
capacity for healing and conscious growth is an unobstructed,
well-functioning nervous system.
The nervous system is composed of the brain, spinal cord, and all of
the nerves throughout the body. It is the primary conduit through
which consciousness and our life-force flows. Our nerves branch out
to every part of our anatomy connecting to every cell, muscle, organ
and tissue, transmitting vital, life-giving energy and information
from the brain to the body and from body back to the brain. This
highly complex system interconnects every part of the body-mind
creating a vast communication network in which every cell is
harmoniously interactive with every other cell.
Indeed, it is your nervous system that controls/regulates and
coordinates every other system in your body … the reproductive
system, digestive system, glandular, circulatory, immune systems,
etc. When your nervous system is clear and flexible there is a
natural flow to your life, growth and health. However, when there is
any interference, obstruction or distortion to this communication,
it poses a serious threat to your body's capacity to respond to and
recover from the demands placed upon it, eventually putting your
physical and mental health at risk.
When we turn our attention toward the worlds ancient healing
traditions and medical systems we
notice a remarkable similarity in their respect of the spine and
nervous system and reverence for the powers resident within it.
The yogic and Hindu traditions speak of the kundalini or serpent
power which rises from the sacrum along the spine correcting and
opening the various chakras or
energy centers of the body. It is taught in these traditions that
when the spine is cleared of its inhibiting patterns profound
regenerative and healing capacities are awakened which facilitate
every area of human growth and evolution. In the martial art
traditions of the orient
the spine is considered the sacred and fundamental pathway of the
body's chi, or innate power. Almost all religious, spiritual and
healing traditions speak of this wealth of energy resident in our
bodies and accessed through our spine and nervous system. The
Japanese call if ki, the Chinese chi, the Egyptian ka. In Mexico,
this spinal life-force energy was represented as the serpent-god
Quetzalcoatl; the Kung people of the Kalahari Desert call this same
power n/um. The Hopi Indians of North America teach that along the
spinal column of man runs an axis containing a number of vibratory
centers starting at the top of the head and flowing to the base of
the spine. The healers of the Hopi tradition say that when this
power is accessed and allowed to flow an individual returns to his
original wholeness. Although the names used to describe this
resident power and the exact means by which it is evoked vary from
culture to culture, it is clearly a phenomenon universally
accessible to humans.
When the integral flow of this complex and powerful energetic
information network gets distorted the body's innate intelligence
cannot properly communicate with the body parts affected. It is like
a radio signal that has been scrambled; or a break in transmission
in a computer network -- only the network we are speaking of is your
body and the effects of the block potentially more dangerous and
harmful.
In fact, to whatever degree your nervous system's ability to
exchange energy and information is diminished there is a
corresponding diminishment in the necessary and intelligent flow of
life-force throughout the body, and often a corresponding decrease
in the perceived quality of one's life. You may recognize this
decreased flow of life-force by the appearance or re-appearance of
various conditions such as anxiety, fatigue, negative thought
patterns, irritability, depression and emotional instability.
Diminishment of your life-force often shows itself in physical
symptoms as well, such as headaches, chronic aches and pains -- even
sexual dysfunction and sleep disturbances. If your life force
becomes severely depressed, various pathologies can manifest that
may show up in any tissue, organ or regulatory system in your body
and can eventually lead to the onset of serious disease or
life-threatening illness.
Doctors trained in the complexities of the spinal network generally
refer to misalignments of the spine and obstructions to the nervous
system as subluxations.
The word subluxation has its roots in the Latin terms "sub" meaning
"under" or "less", and "lux" meaning "light or light force". So,
subluxation refers to the diminished light or the underdevelopment
of the life-force of the body. In terms more specific to physics and
neuro-biology, a subluxation can be understood as an interference
pattern -- a distortion or obstruction in your body's inherent
capacity to conduct energy and exchange information.
Whenever emotional, physical or chemical stresses exceed the body's
capacity to adapt and recover, a subluxation or interference pattern
occurs. Subluxations may be caused by physical traumas such as a car
accident, sports injury or from a fall. They can also occur as the
result of an overload of emotional stresses which, over time, places
excessive tension on the nerves blocking communication pathways
throughout the body.
As holistic doctors dedicated to freeing the nervous system of these
interference patterns, we have witnessed countless examples of the
body's innate healing powers spontaneously unlocked when the nervous
system is cleared of even a few of its inhibiting patterns. When the
spine and nervous system are gently and consistently cleared of
their obstructions, there seem to be no limits on the levels of
growth and transformation a person can reach.
As the body's internal communication network is allowed to function
at a higher and more integrated level, all aspects of the body-mind,
from the cellular level to the organ tissue to the posture of the
spine, even to one's self esteem and relationships with others
improve dramatically. The overall effect of a clear and flexible
nervous system is a felt expansion of being and consciousness and
happiness.
Perhaps we cannot overestimate the importance of keeping our spine
and nervous system free of such obstructions, which can undermine
the ability of our inner Power, and Consciousness to do its amazing
work. By honoring and facilitating this Power within, we begin to
awaken ourselves to the miraculous capacities that exist within our
own body. True health, growth and transformation begins with just
such an awakening, with a renewed understanding of our limitless and
radiant life potential.
